West Bethlehem

I want to tell you about my part of town, West Bethlehem.  Do you like tree lined streets?…nice people?…finding a quiet place to run, or walk the dog?  Move to the Westside! It’s a great place to live.

The general boundaries of the Westside are from the Lehigh River north to Route 22, the western edge is Club Ave., and the eastern side is Main Street downtown.

The Westside is made of various neighborhoods.  Places called Mt. Airy, Rosemont. Rosemont, Rosemont Manor, Old Rosemont, Kaywin, Beth-Allen Gardens, Fireside Estates, Alexander Park, Catasauqua Gardens, Central Park West, Riverview, Monocacy Village plus there are lots of neighborhoods which don’t have names but they are all very nice places to live.

Generally speaking most of the west side is made up turn of the century architecture.  The numbered avenues and named street are lined with twin (double) homes.  Some are quite small while others are 3 floors full of huge rooms and space.  Craftsman homes, big Victorian mansions and Cape Cod homes also dot the landscape.  And then nestled along the Lehigh River are townhomes, apartments and a large apartment building and then right in the middle of things is Hold Family Manor the retirement community which was started in one of the original mansions of the time.

But here on the west side from morning to night you will see citizens walking, running, strolling, out with babies and dogs – all enjoying the tree lined streets and quiet avenues.   We really enjoy our neighbors and neighborhood. Though we may not know one another by name we still say hello when we pass on the sidewalk.

Interestingly enough, when people move to the Westside of Bethlehem, many do not leave.  If in need of a larger home, the new house usually is still in the neighborhood; just down the street or around the corner from the old house.

Local retailers are all close by.  Highways and byways are close too.  There are a few restaurants within walking distance and Main Street is not far either.

ToH1I consider myself very lucky to have met the staff of Traditions of Hanover about 7 years ago. In my opinion you won’t find a finer group of people. They are caring, smart and fun-loving. They know each member of their community personally and they call everyone by their name. The staff really does care about each and every resident. If you are able to move to Traditions of Hanover you will be well cared for! I see loving care happening here each time that I visit.
Traditions of Hanover is an independent living community for seniors nestled in its own quiet campus on the northern side of Bethlehem, PA. It is close to shopping, entertainment, churches, restaurants and highways. The solid & well maintained 3 story property is made up of 114 apartments; 1 bedroom studios, 1 bedroom 1 bath apartments, and 2 bedroom 1 bathroom apartments. And ADA apartments are available in all three styles.
Each apartment is bright and cheerful and has quick access to the rest of the building.  Every unit has either a kitchen or kitchenette so if a resident wanted to prepare a meal in the privacy of their own home they could.  But there is no need to cook! The Dining room serves each resident 2 meals per day. The restaurant quality food is delicious and the menu is always changing.

Lots of social events are planned throughout the year. You’ll never get bored at Traditions of Hanover! Trips to local theaters, stores, markets, museums are always available to do. But the community of residents join together to enjoy their personal interests too, like music, singing, exercise, cards, chess, pool, movies, reading, knitting, needlework and crochet and much, much more.

Edgeboro, Edgeboro Manor and Edgeboro Annex are all neighborhoods located in the northeast part of Bethlehem city.  Outlined by streets like Easton Avenue, Linden Street,  Washington Avenue, Jennings Street, Elmhurst Avenue and Walters Street respectively, these neighborhoods were established in the 1920’s and homes were built well into the 50’s & 60’s. Generally the houses in the Edgeboro section of the neighborhood are between 2000-4000 square feet.  Homes located in Edgeboro Manor and Annex can be smaller but not necessarily much smaller. Much of the architecture consists of well built brick and stone homes on tree lined streets.  In Spring all of the ornamental trees bloom in an array of glorious color like in this photo.  IMG_1211The wide boulevards & streets are lined with mature sycamore trees, oaks and maples. On a hot Summer day it is always so nice to be in the shade of these fantastic trees. IMG_1209IMG_1210

The neighborhoods are serviced by well established local family-run businesses.  Some of these establishments are: Martellucci’s famous for their pizza pies & delicious Italian food. Martellucci Sign The CupThe Bethlehem Dairy Store – also known as “The Cup” serves cold, creamy & delicious ice cream.  nuts About Ice CreamMore ice cream can be found at Nuts About Ice Cream.   This is where you can find fantastic & exotic flavors like Saffron Pistachio and Kulfi.  This ice cream parlor has been serving ice cream & treats to the students and citizens of Bethlehem for more than 27 years. Vegan TreatsThe very popular Vegan Treats supplies the Lehigh Valley and many more restaurants and communities in NYC with their amazing vegan baked delicacies.  Take a look at the web page to see the beautiful concoctions that the proprietor Danielle and her staff create.  AMAZING!

A locally owned & operated food store is The Valley Farm Market which offers fresh vegetables, meats and sundries.

On your way to these fine local business you will probably drive by the national chains like McDonald’s and Wendy’s and Burger King.  There are the national chain stores nearby each of these neighborhoods.  So if you are looking for  Kentucky Fried Chicken, a Wawa hoagie, or a Subway sandwich it is available not far away!
